What does it really look like to turn a love for pretty paper into a creative business?
In the very first episode of The Pretty Paper Podcast, I’m taking you back to where it all began. Before Ledgewood Fine Stationery, before custom wedding invitations filled my days, and before I knew that my childhood love for paper and creativity would eventually become a career in the wedding industry.
After more than 20 years in the wedding industry and more than a decade of owning Ledgewood Fine Stationery, I have learned that building a successful creative business involves so much more than simply being good at your craft.
There have been beautiful projects, incredible clients, business lessons, growing pains, mistakes, pivots, and plenty of moments that have shaped the way I approach both stationery design and entrepreneurship today.
And those conversations are exactly why I created The Pretty Paper Podcast.
I have always been the creative kid.
Give me paper, markers, stickers, or just about anything I could turn into something beautiful, and I was happy.
That early love of creating eventually led me into the wedding industry and the world of stationery. Over the years, I fell in love not only with beautiful paper, typography, printing techniques, and thoughtful details, but also with the meaning behind wedding stationery.
In 2015, I launched Ledgewood Fine Stationery, never fully knowing where that decision would take me.
What began with a love for paper has grown into a custom wedding stationery business creating save the dates, wedding invitations, wedding day paper, and meaningful keepsakes for couples across the country.
Along the way, I have also learned what it means to build a creative business from the ground up.
Of course, I love beautiful wedding invitations.
Give me letterpress, engraving, gorgeous paper, ribbons, monograms, envelope liners, and all the tiny details that make a wedding invitation suite feel special.
But wedding stationery has never been just paper to me.
It holds memories.
It is the invitation your mom is going to keep. It is the save the date your grandmother puts on her refrigerator. It is one of the first tangible pieces of your wedding story.
Long after the wedding flowers are gone and the cake has been eaten, these little pieces of paper can remain tucked inside albums, boxes, and drawers for decades.
That is why I believe thoughtful wedding stationery deserves to be created with intention.
We are not simply designing an invitation.
We are creating a keepsake.
One of the biggest lessons I have learned as a stationery designer and creative business owner is simple:
Being talented at your craft and knowing how to run a business are two very different skill sets.
When you begin a creative business, you may imagine spending your days doing the thing you love most.
Then you quickly discover that you are also responsible for pricing, marketing, sales, client communication, production, bookkeeping, systems, social media, timelines, problem solving, and approximately 100 other things.
Suddenly, you are not simply a designer.
You are a business owner.
Learning how to balance creativity with entrepreneurship has been one of the biggest parts of my journey with Ledgewood Fine Stationery.
I have made mistakes. I have changed processes. I have outgrown systems that once worked beautifully. I have learned when to say yes and, perhaps more importantly, when to say no.
And I am still learning.
The wedding industry is beautiful.
Our social media feeds are filled with gorgeous invitation suites, styled flat lays, stunning weddings, beautiful venues, and perfectly curated details.
But there is another side of running a wedding stationery business that rarely makes it into those photographs.
There are difficult decisions.
Pricing mistakes.
Production problems.
Growing pains.
Client boundaries.
Busy seasons.
Creative blocks.
Systems that stop working as your business grows.
And there are those wonderful breakthrough moments when you finally figure out something that completely changes the way you work.
Those are the conversations I want to have on The Pretty Paper Podcast.
The Pretty Paper Podcast is a place to talk about what it really looks like to build a creative business.
We will talk about wedding stationery, printing and production, pricing, branding, marketing, social media, client experience, business systems, creativity, entrepreneurship, and the lessons learned while building something of your own.
Some episodes will be solo conversations where I share what I have learned throughout my years in the wedding and stationery industries.
Others will feature conversations with fellow stationers, designers, wedding professionals, and creatives who bring their own experiences and expertise to the table.
My hope is that you leave each episode with something practical to think about, something new to try, or simply a little encouragement for the season of business you are currently walking through.
After more than two decades in the wedding industry, there are plenty of things I wish I could tell the younger version of myself.
But maybe that is one of the sweetest parts of gaining experience.
You learn.
You grow.
And then you have the opportunity to turn around and share what you learned with someone else.
If I can help another creative avoid a mistake I have already made, approach their business differently, feel more confident in a decision, or remember why they started creating in the first place, then sharing those lessons is worth it.
And this is only the beginning.
